Department of Labor and Industrial Relations Director Lawrence Rebman to Tour the Greater Kansas City Builders’ Association Education and Training Center

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DOLIR) Director Lawrence Rebman today will plan a stop in North Kansas City where he will meet with administrators of the Builders’ Association. At 10:30 a.m., Rebman will be meeting with the Association’s President, Don Greenwell, and the Workforce Development Manager, Alise Martiny, to tour their Training and Education Center, and thank them for the services they provide to Missouri’s union workforce. The meeting also will include discussions about ideas or concerns of the Association.

“The Builders’ Association has provided labor relations services to thousands of Missouri union workers in areas such as training and apprenticeships,” said Rebman. “These services are greatly appreciated and needed, as we work to turn the economy around and provide Missourians with the skills they need to get them back to work as quickly as possible.”

“The Builders’ Association has existed for more than 120 years,” said Greenwell. “We provide training to more than 4,500 union employees each year, and approximately 2,000 apprentices are currently enrolled at the North Kansas City training center. Our Kansas City chapter has more than 1,100 corporate members who employ more than 35,000 workers, so we understand the importance of building careers and strengthening workforces.”

In addition to training, the Association provides labor relations services to management in the area of labor-management disputes resolution. Also, through a sister company the Association operates a successful mutual insurance company for contractors’ workers’ compensation coverage and hold reserves valued at approximately $30 million.

Missouri's unemployed workers receiving training at centers such as this one, still are eligible for unemployment benefits as they develop and hone skills that allow them to return to work quickly and advance their careers.

The Builders’ Association Education and Training Center is located at 105 W. 12th Avenue in North Kansas City, Mo. The 95,000 square foot facility includes a new 10,000 square foot classroom addition, state-of-the-art laboratories, training rooms, and a computer lab. Management training is delivered in the classroom and via the Internet.
