Missouri Department of Labor’s Commission on Human Rights to Co-Sponsor
Fair Housing Symposium
Event Coincides with the 40th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act
JEFFERSON CITY, MO – The Missouri Commission on Human Rights (MCHR), a division of the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, is co-sponsoring a Fair Housing Symposium from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2008. The event, which is free to the public, will be held in Jefferson City at the City Council Chambers located at 320 E. McCarty St.
Joining the MCHR in this cooperative effort is the City of Jefferson, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the Jefferson City Human Relations Commission. The symposium will include representatives from each of the co-sponsoring organizations who will speak on the topic of fair housing. Persons or organizations that could benefit from this event include: realtors, real estate lenders, mortgage lenders, landlords, tenant associations, and housing authorities.
“This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act,” said MCHR Director Alisa Warren. “The Fair Housing Symposium provides the opportunity to engage in dialogue surrounding fair housing issues that deal with disparity and how to eliminate unfair practices,” Warren added.
On April 11, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act. This important legislation was one of a series of civil rights laws that sought to secure the rights of individuals and extend the full blessings of liberty to all Americans. The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing and, in doing so, furthers the ideals championed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and other heroes of the civil rights movement.
