Gov. Blunt Announces Disaster Unemployment Assistance

Available for Ten Additional Counties

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Gov. Matt Blunt and the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DOLIR) today announced that Missourians living or working in 10 additional counties may be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance due to recent severe storms and flooding.

Missourians who file from the following 10 counties have no later than August 22, 2008, to file for disaster unemployment assistance in: Andrew, Cass, Greene, Holt, Johnson, Nodaway, Stone, Taney, Vernon, and Webster counties.

On July 11, 2008, Linn, Gentry and Livingston were declared disaster counties. Persons living in these counties affected by flooding have until August 11, 2008, to file.

Missourians living in Clark, Lewis, Lincoln, Marion, Pike, Ralls, and St. Charles counties, which were declared as disaster counties in June, have no later than July 30, 2008, to file for disaster unemployment assistance.

Disaster unemployment assistance is intended for those who are ineligible for benefits under a state’s regular unemployment insurance program. Farmers, self-employed individuals and others who are denied regular unemployment insurance benefits may now be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.

Funds for this program are provided by the federal government and do not come from the state employer payroll taxes used to finance regular unemployment benefits.

Missourians who need information about how to file a claim should call (800) 788-4002. Additionally, Missourians impacted by the severe storms and flooding in all the declared counties can register for assistance by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at (800) 621-3362), TTY

(800) 462-7585), or register with FEMA online at www.fema.gov.
