Deadline to File Disaster Unemployment Assistance in Ten Additional Counties Nearing

JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Last month, the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations announced a third amendment to the June 25, 2008, Presidential Disaster Declaration to include Missourians living or working in 10 additional counties due to recent severe storms and flooding. Those Missourians were possibly eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.

Disaster unemployment assistance is intended for those who are not eligible for benefits under a state’s regular unemployment insurance program. Farmers, self-employed individuals, and others who are denied regular unemployment insurance benefits may now be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance.

Missourians who filed from the following 10 additional counties have no later than Aug. 22, 2008, to file for disaster unemployment assistance in: Andrew, Cass, Greene, Holt, Johnson, Nodaway, Stone, Taney, Vernon, and Webster counties.

Funds for this program are provided by the federal government and do not come from the state employer payroll taxes used to finance regular unemployment benefits.

Missourians who need information about how to file a claim should call (800) 788-4002. Additionally, Missourians impacted by the severe storms and flooding in all the declared counties can register for assistance by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at (800) 621-3362,

(TTY (800) 462-7585), or register with FEMA online at www.fema.gov.
